NOURISH Project - Mkalama, Singida
Francis Joseph Thomas is a Community Development Professional with hands-on experience in nutrition-sensitive agriculture, community mobilization, project implementation, and monitoring and evaluation in Tanzania. He is currently a Project Officer on the Nourish project, which is implemented under a partnership of SNV, Farm Africa, RECODA and TIMAC. In this role he leads community sensitization on the use of the six food groups to improve family nutrition and reduce malnutrition. He also promotes Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs), Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and the adoption of kitchen gardens to improve farm production and food security.
Francis previously worked as a Project Officer with the World Vision Tanzania THRIVE project, implemented by RECODA in Kilimatinde Area Programme, Manyoni District. There he managed project interventions, coordinated the procurement, distribution and sale of chicks and inputs, and wrote reports. He also linked RECODA with the World Vision Tanzania Kilimatinde office. His work covered training on food preservation methods that retain nutrients, distribution of chickens and orange fleshed sweet potatoes (OFSP) to reduce stunting among children under two years, and community sensitization on improved poultry keeping. He also facilitated day-old chick rearing, including breed selection, housing and brooding, feeding, disease control, and group dynamics and management, and monitored and evaluated interventions among beneficiaries.
Earlier in his career, he took part in implementing the Boresha Lishe project in Singida, a nutrition initiative supported by WFP and implemented with RECODA (April to October 2020). He also showed leadership as a leader among more than 800 youths at 826KJ Mpwapwa JKT (October 2023 to November 2024), where he gained entrepreneurship skills that he continues to apply in poultry keeping and agriculture.
Francis holds a Bachelor's degree in Community Development from the Tengeru Institute of Community Development (2018–2021). He is proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and is fluent in English and Kiswahili. He is self-motivated and committed to participatory, community-centred development that improves nutrition and livelihoods.
