Project Officer

NOURISH Project - Babati, Manyara

Nickson J. Ringo is an agricultural and natural resources professional with over five years of field, research and project management experience in Tanzania. He specializes in agroecology, climate-resilient farming, agricultural extension, and rangeland management. He is currently a Project Officer on the Nourish Project, a consortium initiative of SNV, Farm Africa, T-MARC Tanzania and Research, Community and Organizational Development Associates (RECODA). The project promotes food security, nutrition and climate-resilient agriculture. In this role, he coordinates field implementation, designs and delivers capacity-building training, and supports monitoring and evaluation, while building local capacity so that results continue beyond the life of the project.

Nickson has solid experience in planning, implementing, monitoring and reporting on projects, with a focus on farmer training, extension and community capacity building. He has worked closely with local government authority, NGOs and local communities. His work covers sustainable agriculture, agroecology, livestock value chains, food security and nutrition, and community savings and loan groups (VSLA).

Prior to his current role, he was Project Officer for the World Vision and RECODA Partnership Project, where he managed activities across the full project cycle for poultry and pig value chains. He trained farmers, oversaw input distribution, carried out field monitoring, guided the project team and submitted reports on time. Earlier at RECODA, he worked on projects using the Rural Initiatives for Participatory Agricultural Transformation (RIPAT) approach. He led community mobilization for Village Savings and Loan Associations and improved sustainable farming technologies, and monitored the uptake of these technologies. He also supervised data collection for an end-line evaluation and managed data entry for analysis in IBM SPSS.

Nickson began his career in rangeland management at the National Ranching Company (NARCO), working at the Ruvu and Kongwa ranches. There he assessed range condition, monitored livestock health, identified pasture species and studied pastoralism and indigenous knowledge. He later worked as a Research Assistant at the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), carrying out qualitative fieldwork on digital and climate-smart agriculture in the Morogoro, Coastal and Dar es Salaam regions. He interviewed traders, processors and transporters, and led focus group discussions with community members.

Nickson is also an active researcher in agroecology and agricultural extension. He has co-authored three peer-reviewed journal articles on how smallholder farmers perceive and adopt agroecological practices, and how effective the RIPAT approach is in supporting this transition. His literature review on the role of extension systems in agroecological transition was accepted and presented at the 4th National Ecological Organic Agriculture Conference (NEOAC). His skills include qualitative and quantitative research, data collection and analysis, and the use of SPSS, R, QGIS, Kobo Collect and Microsoft Office.

He holds an MSc in Management of Natural Resources for Sustainable Agriculture and a BSc in Range Management, both from Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA). He is fluent in written and spoken English and Kiswahili. Nickson combines technical expertise with strong field and research skills and a firm commitment to evidence-based, participatory and sustainable agricultural development.
